The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management course is ideal for managers, safety representatives and health and safety advisors who work in process industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals, both inside and outside the UK. 

The course has no formal entry requirements. 

The National HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management involves a minimum of 28 taught hours and approximately 20 hours of private study and background reading.  

  • When studied through virtual classroom, the course is 4 days in addition to online revision and an online exam.  

  • When studied through in-house learning, the course is 4 days. 

The online exams are run by NEBOSH every two months. Exams are included in the cost of the course. You will be contacted with regards to exam dates when the course has been booked.   

Our classroom course timings are 09:00-17:00 Monday - Friday.

The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management is a one-unit qualification, consisting of the following elements: 

Unit PSM1: Process safety management 

  • Element 1: Process safety leadership 

  • Element 2: Management of process risk 

  • Element 3: Process safety hazard control 

  • Element 4: Fire protection and emergency response 

Upon completing the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management, delegates will have an understanding of the following areas of knowledge:

  • Establishment of process management systems

  • Asset management and maintenance strategies

  • Safe start-up and shutdown of process plant

  • Performance standards for safety critical systems and equipment

  • Hazards and controls for:

  • Chemical reactions

  • Bulk storage of dangerous substances

  • Fire and explosion

  • Purpose and features of emergency plans

  • This unit is divided into the following four key elements:

  • Process safety leadership

  • Management of process risk

  • Process safety hazard control

  • Fire and explosion protection

The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management is assessed through a multiple-choice assessment which must be accessed and completed via NEBOSH’s Online Assessment Platform. Learners will be given a 24-hour period in which to complete the exam and can begin at any time within the 24-hour window. 

Many candidates who have passed the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management progress to studying the NEBOSH National General Certificate, or the degree-level NEBOSH Diploma qualification. 

  • When and how will I receive my NEBOSH results?

Results are provided by NEBOSH after completing the course. NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive after the results have been announced.

  • What happens if I fail the NEBOSH assessment?

The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost. 

  • What level are NEBOSH qualifications?

NEBOSH Certificates are level 3, which is equivalent to an A level qualification. NEBOSH Diplomas are level 6, which is equivalent to an Honours Degree.

  • Are there any entry requirements for NEBOSH Certificates?

There are no entry requirements, which makes a NEBOSH Certificate an ideal starting point for your health and safety training. Learners must have a suitable standard of English language to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.  

  • When and how will I receive my results and NEBOSH certificate?

NEBOSH send out the results 10-12 weeks after the exams. Your certificates will arrive from Phoenix 10-12 weeks after the results have been announced.
