What is the NEBOSH National Diploma?
The NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals is one of the most highly valued qualifications for health and safety professionals in the world, considered the gold standard among these qualifications.
It is the highest-level training NEBOSH offers and as such the degree-level course is a mark of expertise and professionalism for the 18,000 who have earned it since it launched in 1980. The qualification teaches in line with legislation and guidance set out by the UK HSE (Health and Safety Executive).
Throughout the NEBOSH National Diploma candidates will cover the practical skills that are essential to occupational health and safety professionals. We assess candidates’ ability to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and teach them how to deliver positive change in the workplace.
NEBOSH Diploma candidates can choose from a range of learning types including traditional classroom sessions classroom sessions, virtual classroom environments, or an e-Learning course for maximum flexibility.

There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH National Diploma; however, we recommend first completing one of the following courses first, as the NEBOSH Diploma syllabus assumes that learners will have this level of prior learning:
The qualification requires a minimum of 191 taught hours, plus 144 recommended self-study hours and 80 assessment hours.
When studied through e-Learning, Phoenix recommends spending approximately 330 hours on the course and 80 hours on assessments.
When studied through classroom or virtual classroom learning, the course is 27 days, in addition to revision and exam time.

Study for your NEBOSH diploma in-person at one of our venues in Leeds, London or Birmingham or learn virtually with Phoenix. Both our in-person and online NEBOSH Diploma courses come with the Phoenix pass pledge which means that candidates are entitled to continue studying (free of charge) if they fail to meet the required standard in the examinations.
When studying the NEBOSH Diploma online via e-Learning, students gain access to our specially designed, interactive diploma course. E-Learning students can study wherever and whenever they please, pausing and resuming their course as they need, allowing them maximum flexibility with their studies.

The NEBOSH National Diploma course consists of three units. Each one can be completed separately and is assessed independently, with a certificate provided upon passing the exam for each unit. They are broken into 'Know' and 'Do', covering what a health and safety professional must know and do in the workplace respectively.
DN1 – Know – workplace health and safety principles
DN2 – Do – controlling workplace health issues
DN3 – Do – controlling workplace safety issues
After gaining this qualification, candidates will have a firm grasp of all the following areas of knowledge:
You will be able to source, develop, evaluate and interpret relevant health and safety information (such as legislation, guidance, best practice, procedures) and communicate it effectively to those who need it (both within your organisation and those affected by your organisation’s activities such as contractors and insurers).
You will be able to promote a positive health and safety culture by: gaining commitment and participation; and engaging, supporting and influencing leaders (and others) to change attitudes and behaviour and make health and safety a priority.
You will be able to assess, develop and maintain individual and organisational health and safety competence.
You will be able to understand risk management including the techniques for identifying hazards, the different types of risk assessment, considerations when implementing sensible and proportionate additional control measures and developing a risk management strategy
You will be able to develop and implement proactive and reactive health and safety monitoring systems and carry out reviews and auditing of such systems.
You will be able to continually develop your own professional skills and ethics to actively influence improvements in health and safety by providing persuasive arguments to workers at all levels.
You will be able to develop a health and safety policy strategy within your organisation (including proactive safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and the change management process)
You will be able to contribute to health and safety legal actions.
You will be able to manage contractors and supply chains to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
You will be able to advise the organisation on a range of common workplace health issues/ hazards including how these can be assessed and controlled and the legal duties associated with these issues/hazards.

The assessments focus on the application of knowledge to help you prepare for the health and safety tasks faced in the workplace.
Each assessment is a substantial undertaking. We anticipate that it will take you around 60 hours to complete the DN1 assignment and 40 hours each for the DN2 and DN3 case studies. The time-period given for you to complete each assessment reflects this:
Unit DN1: 4 weeks (20 working days)
Unit DN2: 2 weeks (10 working days)
Unit DN3: 2 weeks (10 working days)
If you are booking the classroom course, your exam cost and NEBOSH registration will be included within the price. If you are booking on to the e-Learning course your exams will be an extra fee and will need to be booked separately. When you book your first exam you will also need to pay the NEBOSH registration fee, which is £70 as of 1st April 2024.

The NEBOSH Diploma acts as a stepping-stone on the path to postgraduate study. Many UK universities accept the NEBOSH Diploma as their criteria for MSc-level courses, so it provides a clear route to masters-level postgraduate study.

Results are provided by NEBOSH after completing the course. NEBOSH send out the results 50 working days after each exam.
What happens if I fail the NEBOSH assessment?
The Phoenix Pass Pledge will cover your additional studies, but you retake the exams at your own cost.
What level are NEBOSH qualifications?
NEBOSH Certificates are level 3, which is equivalent to an A level qualification. NEBOSH Diplomas are level 6, which is equivalent to an Honours Degree.
Are there any entry requirements for NEBOSH Certificates?
There are no entry requirements, which makes a NEBOSH Certificate an ideal starting point for your health and safety training. Learners must have a suitable standard of English language to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.
