Phoenix launches the new Data Protection Awareness Training course

14th August 2023

Data protection and privacy is an increasingly common talking point for internet users, with many concerned that their data may be taken or misused by organisations. This has led to a greater awareness of which data organisations want and what they use data for. Yes, the popups that appear when you open a website are increasingly being read and assessed by internet users everywhere. In fact, 33% of users have distanced themselves from organisations and their products due to concern over data privacy1, making it a key point of concern for many businesses.

That’s why we’re launching a new Data Protection Awareness training course, designed as a practical and accessible introduction to data protection practices and law. In this blog we’ll discuss the contents of the course, who it’s suitable for and the advantages it offers, as well as how it compares to our existing GDPR course.

What is the Data Protection Awareness course?

The data protection awareness course is a short, online course that covers the fundamental information all members of an organisation need should they handle personal data of any kind, whether it be emails, names, addresses or appointment times. It covers key information such as the responsibilities of organisations who handle personal data, the principles of data protection, and what to do in the event of a data breach. This content is punctuated by common examples of data protection practices, designed to act as a practical introduction or refresher to the topic, allowing employees to handle personal data with confidence.

Who is the Data Protection Awareness course for?

Due to the greater focus on examples and practicality of the data protection awareness course, it is more suited to employees who have to regularly handle personal data. This data could be anything from emails addresses, appointment times to date births and names. The course provides these individuals with relatable examples, so they know how to handle data safely. However, because it does not contain greater legislative detail, it is not as suitable for managers and organisation leaders, who need to be aware of the legal details. These individuals will find our GDPR training more beneficial, as we’ll touch on later.

Why study Data Protection Awareness Training?

As we’ve already mentioned, data privacy is an increasing concern for many individuals who regularly use the internet or the services of organisations. Because of this, data protection training is all the more beneficial, as training reduces the chance of data being misused, misplaced, or stolen in a data breach, raising the confidence of both the employees who handle data, as well as that of individuals who share their data with you.

In addition to this, there are a range of other benefits which the course can offer both employers and learners. For employers these include helping to protect your organisation from data protection related fines and data breaches. And for learners, benefits include developing your knowledge of data protection law, applicable to a wide array of industries, as well as developing an understanding of your responsibilities as a data handler.

Data Protection Awareness vs GDPR Training

Although there are similarities between our new data protection awareness course and existing GDPR Training course, there are a number of key differences that make them suitable for different members of an organisation.

In regard to course content, Data Protection Awareness training provides exactly that- an awareness of data protection intended to be a practical introduction or refresher for those who often handle personal data. On the other hand, GDPR training provides greater detail on the exact data protection laws enforced in the UK, beneficial for organisation managers and leaders.

Because of this difference, our Data Protection Awareness training course has less intensive content with practical examples and exercises, while GDPR training has a greater breadth of legal information covering data protection law and the consequences of not following it. Both courses however can be studied online, and both completed in approximately 40 minutes. The courses also share similar assessments, which can be retaken immediately if you don’t pass the first-time round. GDPR training has a multiple-choice test, whereas the Data Protection Awareness training is tested via a scenario-based assessment, simulating real life situations which could occur during data handling. Both courses also award you with a certificate upon completion, which can be printed to evidence your new knowledge.
