How long is a NEBOSH and IOSH Certificate valid for?
At Phoenix, we offer the most sought-after health and safety qualifications. That includes a wide range of courses accredited by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Some of the questions we receive most include “how long does an IOSH certificate last?” or “will my NEBOSH qualification expire?” Candidates and employers naturally want to know if they will need to do it again in a few years.
NEBOSH and IOSH are everlasting, but always changing
The short answer is that your NEBOSH and IOSH qualifications never expire. Once you have passed the exam or assessment, your certificate is valid for life.
However, the knowledge you gain on the course is a different matter. That evolves and requires regular updating.
After all, the one thing everyone knows about health and safety is that it never stands still. The law continually evolves, new regulations are introduced, and the standards set by professional bodies change to keep pace with technology or culture.
How long does IOSH Managing Safely last?
Given the popularity of the course, it's worth restating that the IOSH Managing Safely certificate doesn't expire, just like the rest of the IOSH and NEBOSH certificates. That being said, the safety responsibilities of managers are always changing which is why we offer a dedicated IOSH Managing Safely Refresher course. IOSH recommends those who have completed Managing Safely take the refresher every three years to ensure their knowledge is up to date.
Update your health and safety knowledge
Due to the ever-shifting nature of health and safety practices and law, both NEBOSH and IOSH strongly recommend that you enrol on a refresher course for the latest version of your qualification every 3 years. It’s the simplest way to remain fully aware of what has changed since you became qualified.
More importantly, it helps to ensure that health and safety practice within your workplace is compliant. The benefits of a positive health and safety culture are to enable everyone to work safely, stay healthy, and be as productive as possible. These goals are only achievable with a firm grasp of the latest rules, knowledge, procedures, and skills.
Health and safety legislation is constantly evolving, so the NEBOSH and IOSH syllabuses are renewed regularly to reflect any changes
If you’re unsure whether you need to refresh your knowledge or not, you can get in touch with our training and qualifications team, who will be able to advise you.
Health and Safety Refresher courses
IOSH Managing Safely Refresher
As we've already mentioned, IOSH Managing Safely has a shorter refresher course which can be taken instead of a full, updated course. This is the IOSH Managing Safely Refresher Course and can be studied via virtual classroom, e-learning or in-house with Phoenix.
NEBOSH Construction Certificate
At Phoenix, we also offer industry-specific courses, such as the NEBOSH Construction Certificate. This training is suitable for construction industry candidates, who have completed the NEBOSH General Certificate in the past five years.
Ready to move up the career ladder?
Another reason you might want to update your knowledge is if you’ve taken on new responsibilities, perhaps by moving to a senior role. In that case, the first step is to check which next-level course is most suitable for your precise needs. Should you choose a NEBOSH or IOSH course, for example?
That decision may depend on what your ambitions are and how you see your career developing. Will the NEBOSH National Certificate help to advance your health and safety career? Read our blog on what jobs you can aspire to with a NEBOSH qualification.
