What Jobs can a NEBOSH Certificate get you?

4th January 2021

Are you thinking about studying a NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety? It’s a great place to start if you’re serious about becoming a health and safety professional or furthering your career. NEBOSH certificates are usually taken by people who currently have some health and safety duties but wish to specialise in the field and gain more knowledge.

What is NEBOSH?

NEBOSH stands for National Educational Board in Occupational Safety and Health. It is an independent organisation offering vocational qualifications in health, safety and environmental management. NEBOSH don’t run courses themselves; they leave that to experts like us.

What is the NEBOSH Certificate?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is considered the standard of health and safety qualifications. It is respected by employers across industries, and is designed to equip employees with the necessary skills to create a safer workplace.

It’s for this reason that more than 200,000 people in the UK currently hold a NEBOSH Certificate.

The General Certificate is an evolving qualification, too. NEBOSH recently introduced an updated syllabus, reflecting the way occupational health and safety has changed – and will continue to do so – in the years ahead.

Who should study the NEBOSH certificate?

The NEBOSH General Certificate course provides a valuable overview of the core aspects of occupational health and safety. In turn, candidates will be able to manage workplace risks effectively after completing the training.

NEBOSH has consulted thousands of leading experts and organisations in creating and updating the certificate curriculum. It reflects the needs of different employers and is relevant to every industry.

The NGC course is suitable for managers, supervisors, and anybody with health and safety management responsibilities. That’s what makes it the perfect stepping-stone for anyone who wishes to forge a career in health and safety.

How NEBOSH can help you develop your career?

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), 87% of UK employers ask for a NEBOSH certificate when they are recruiting for health and safety roles.

Many people who earn a NEBOSH qualification early in their health and safety career go on to the more advanced NEBOSH diploma, which is a degree-level qualification.

What jobs can you get with a NEBOSH certificate?

NEBOSH certificate holders may want to progress their career by taking one of the following jobs:

  • Health and Safety Officer

  • Health and Safety Advisor

  • Health and Safety Auditor

  • Health and Safety Co-ordinator

  • Health and Safety Executive

  • Health and Safety Manager

  • Environment, Health and Safety Manager

What’s the difference between a Health and Safety Advisor and Manager?

According to the HSE Recruitment Network website, an advisor is typically trained and qualified to NEBOSH certificate level. In contrast, a manager is more likely to have a more advanced qualification, such as the NEBOSH diploma.

Health and safety advisors are typically very site-focused, working at an operational level to ensure the safety of workers and that the organisation is abiding by legislation. A manager on the other hand may have a more strategic role, focusing on systems and processes rather than day-to-day matters.

  • Other duties of a H&S Manager may include:

  • Preventing problems from arising

  • Providing practical solutions

  • Conducting assessments and inspections

  • Creating reports

  • Recommending solutions when something goes wrong

NEBOSH Requested on Job Vacancies

It was reported that around 51% of job vacancies in the health and safety profession require candidates to hold a NEBOSH Certificate, up from 45% the previous year. This figure is set to rise by 2021, making it even more critical for candidates to have the appropriate training.

NEBOSH Diplomas bring higher salaries

NEBOSH publishes its own Jobs Barometer study. This research shows that holding a professional qualification can make a considerable difference to the expected salary of health and safety professionals.

For instance, those required to hold a NEBOSH Diploma earn on average £49,000, 16% higher than those in jobs where the Diploma wasn’t specified.
