AI in Workplace Health and Safety. How to use it responsibly, and why competence still matters most.

The real question for organisations isn’t whether AI belongs in their safety strategy. It’s whether they can adopt it responsibly, with the right governance, competence, and accountability in place.

The UK regulator’s message is clear: AI is not a separate category of risk that sits outside existing duties. If it creates or changes workplace risk, it needs to be assessed and controlled like any other hazard; sensibly, proportionately, and with effective controls.

Why AI matters now (and why it can’t be treated as “IT’s problem”)

  • ILO: AI and digitalisation can improve OSH outcomes, but also introduce new risks requiring proactive responses.
